In Rare Cases, Autoantibodies Can Cause Severe Reactions to a Live-Attenuated Virus Chikungunya Vaccine That Has Been Discontinued in the U.S.

Rare, but severe reactions to the live-attenuated Chikungunya vaccine have been reported, particularly in older adults, but their cause was unknown. Researchers demonstrated that these specific reactions are linked to preexisting autoantibodies that disable early antiviral defenses, allowing the weakened vaccine virus to spread unchecked and, in some cases, cause inflammation in the brain. This version of the vaccine has been discontinued in the U.S.
