Bridging Fontan Patients to Transplant--at Home

Supporting children with single-ventricle physiology on a ventricular assist device (VAD) is highly complex. Because of the challenges of this unique physiology, few centers in the country can safely discharge these patients home while they wait for a transplant. Recently, Children's Hospital Los Angeles achieved its first home discharge of an adolescent with Fontan circulation supported by a fully implantable VAD. The milestone reflects the extensive expertise of CHLA's Single Ventricle Program, which treats more children with single-ventricle heart disease than almost any center in the world.
