Welcome to The ACP Advocate
Labor Day has passed, Congress is back in session and it’s fall in Washington. You wouldn’t be able to tell that, though, from the hot weather we’ve been having this week. Our first story for you today is about what we expect might happen in Congress with health care this fall. While the SGR proposals are still on the table, there are some other very pressing issues that have the potential to shift congressional focus. Take a look at the article for more details about how we think this might play out.
Second, we have a story for you about the status of some of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). As you may have heard, the administration decided to delay a couple of provisions in order to make sure that we’re fully prepared when it comes time to implement them. Check out the article for more on those and for information about a new ACA resource we’re providing to you (we’ll have a full overview of that in our next issue).
Finally, our third story today is all about the debate over what insurance premiums will look like as the new health care law goes into full effect. Many people have expressed that they’re concerned that the impact of the law will be to make premium rates rise for most people. This article speaks with a few economists who make the case that this might not be the case.

Apply for ACP’s 2014 Washington Internship
Applications are now being accepted for the College’s Health Policy Internship for Resident/Fellow and Medical Student Members. The internship represents an opportunity for one resident/fellow member and one medical student member to develop legislative knowledge and advocacy skills through working directly with the College’s Washington staff. The internship will last for 4 weeks starting on April 28 and ending with ACP’s 2014 Leadership Day. The deadline to apply is Oct. 11. |
